NEW Saudi Product Safety Program Being Implemented

Written by Interpower | 2/11/19 3:45 PM

The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has recently implemented a “Saudi Product Safety Programme (SALEEM)” by requiring specific online certification. This went into effect January 1, 2019.

This new regulation affects those exporting to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). According to a news release from Intertek, “SASO have developed their own electronic certification system called SABER. Importers must now initiate the certification request online, for the Regulated Products they intend to import by accessing SABER and registering the Regulated Products and choosing one of the SASO Approved Certification Bodies to process their request.”

This process has two stages: (1) Issuance of Product Certification of Conformity (PCoC) and (2) Issuance of Shipment Certificate of Conformity (SCoC). According to the Intertek release, regarding Stage 1: “The PCoC is issued online in SABER platform for every regulated product as per the applicable product standards defined in the relevant Technical Regulation.” Regarding Stage 2: “Every regulated product included in the shipment will be verified by Intertek to ensure there is an existing valid PCoC for that product and if found to be true then a SCoC is issued.”

While Interpower® is not directly affected by this, customers exporting to Saudi Arabia will need to register their product on the SABER database. The customer’s local KSA importer will be the one to apply for the SALEEM certificate.
